The subject of this work is the development and application of wearable systems that can be used to support human health. This includes, for example, methods for recognising mental states or for recognising human activities to improve workflow. The position is part of the KD2School research training group. In addition to technical issues relating to the hardware and software of the wearables, questions arise from the fields of AI and HCI. The evaluation of the research prototypes will take place in realistic applications, and we will make the resulting prototypes available as open source or hardware (see our previous work e.g. OpenEarable, EdgeML). The position is planned as a doctoral position (a doctoral plan should be jointly developed within the first year) and is limited to a maximum of 6 years, but the completion of the doctorate should be aimed for after approx. 4 years.

The TECO research group (www.teco.edu) consists of a highly motivated, interdisciplinary team that takes on challenging and varied tasks with a high degree of personal responsibility and creative freedom in the field of ubiquitous computing/wearable computing/AI. TECO is part of the Chair of Pervasive Computing within the Faculty of Computer Science at KIT (one of the German Universities of Excellence and Research University of the Helmholtz Association). TECO’s aim is to be at the top international level both in terms of research results – for example in terms of the quality of publications – and in terms of application-driven usability – through many start-ups and direct cooperation with medium-sized companies and large-scale industry. Our research group is interdisciplinary.

Your profile
You should either have a strong background in machine learning and be proficient in current ML or data analytics frameworks (such as pytorch, keras, tensorflow, ssklearn, pandas). Programming skills are a prerequisite for this position, skills in embedded hardware development (e.g. Arduino) and fun-of-programming would be favourable. You should also have a master’s degree in computer science or a comparable degree programme with at least some content covering some computer science topics. Other experience is also advantageous, e.g. advanced programming skills, own start-up, or writing scientific papers.
